Why The "Guardians Of The Galaxy" Oldies Mixtape Is One Of The Year's Best Soundtracks

Chris Pratt in Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel Studios

With apologies to Zach Braff and his painstaking mix of new and familiar indie rock in Wish I Was Here, the best soundtracks of the summer have been proudly uncool. First there was Boyhood,
a film that uses its musical choices as chronological signposts along
its 12-year journey. The music that accompanies Mason’s (Ellar Coltrane)
growing up is acutely of its moment — stuff like Sheryl Crow’s “Soak Up The Sun” and Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know.”
They’re not meant to be the best songs or the most on point, but the
aural wallpaper that was once inescapable, and that’s instantly
evocative of a particular stretch of time.

The music that carries Guardians of the Galaxy through its interplanetary adventure is even more joyously unhip. Marvel’s latest movie has an AM Gold
soundtrack that, on one level, is completely at odds with its sci-fi
setting, and that on another, better level, is absolutely perfect. It’s
powered by a literal cassette mixtape — Awesome Mix Vol.1 — made
for Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) when he was a Midwestern kid, by a dying
mom who wanted him to hear her favorite songs. They’re ’60s and ’70s
radio fodder, classic and cheesy pop hits that have survived enough
decades to accrue the heft of collective memory. When the title splashes
across the screen, it’s over a wide shot of Peter with his Sony Walkman
headphones on, rocking his way through the craggy landscape of an
abandoned planet to the sounds of Redbone’s “Come And Get Your Love.”

Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios

It’s such an effervescent sequence, Peter there in the corner of a screen filled with fantastical scenery out of Flash Gordon,
jiving to a hit single from 1974 on an obsolete electronics artifact.
It sets the tone for what turns out to be an emphatically distinctive
movie from director and co-writer James Gunn, but it also sets up the
unusual tension that makes Guardians of the Galaxy
work so well — it’s a throwback sci-fi movie that exists in a universe
in which the franchises it owes a debt to actually exist.

Guardians of the Galaxy summons the look and feel of space operas and comedies from the ’70s and ’80s like The Last Starfighter, Battle Beyond the Stars, Red Dwarf, and, of course, Star Wars,
but it also gives us good reason to believe that Peter grew up watching
those movies himself. He does look pretty happy jetting over crevices
populated by giant space eels and wooing alien women of various shades
of red and green, like a guy who, even though he was kidnapped, wasn’t
sorry to be lifted away from a scene of real emotional anguish on Earth
to escape into epic interstellar adventures.

The mixtape wasn’t a late addition to Guardians of the Galaxy.
Gunn told BuzzFeed the idea of the Walkman was the first thing that
came to him, and became the center of the story. “We’re bringing a bunch
of people into this weird, strange, wonderful, beautiful, colorful
place, but that can be a little off-putting,” said Gunn. “I felt like,
for me, the music was a way to invite you in and make you feel a little
more comfortable, because it’s something we’re familiar with in the face
of all this oddness.” The songs were written into the screenplay, and
Dave Jordan, the music supervisor, was able to clear every track Gunn
requested.

Marvel Studios

The music is comfortable, because unless you’re an extraterrestrial yourself, it’s practically impossible to have avoided hearing at least the irresistible strains of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” which plays over the end of the movie, if not the Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb,” Rupert Holmes’ wretched novelty hit “Escape (The Piña Colada Song),” or Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling,”
which was used so memorably in the trailer. They’re songs that would
play at weddings or prompt boozy bar singalongs, and it’s sharply
relatable that, far from home, Peter reaches for them as musical comfort
food. They bring a human edge to a story that makes no attempt to be
grounded, that bounces from alien extremists to mining colonies to space
prisons and never comes close to Earth again.

The use of music in Guardians of the Galaxy also echoes one of the greatest discordant song choices in recent movie history — when WALL·E opens by layering “Put On Your Sunday Clothes” from the musical Hello, Dolly!
over shots of our environmentally devastated, empty planet. When you
get over the shock of the familiar, cheery strains accompanying such
remote imagery, there’s an extra impact to the combination that has
nothing to do with the dissonance and everything to do with the idea of
this scrap of human existence enduring in such a hostile place. Guardians of the Galaxy presents a similar flicker of the mundane but moving in the middle of a spectacular, otherworldly landscape.

Peter Quill isn’t just human, he’s an ’80s kid, and he’s brought
those remnants of his pop culture-saturated childhood with him to his
life of space scavenging and piracy, toting an aura of wood-paneled rec
rooms and arcade games, thermoses with cartoon branding, and Who’s the Boss?.
In his hands, the Five Stairsteps’ soul standard “Ooh Child” may not be
the weapon with which he’s able to save the galaxy, but it’s enough to
give a supervillain pause — and that’s a pretty great achievement for
any mixtape.

'Guardians of the Galaxy' Trailer Sends ‘Hooked On a Feeling’ Sales Through the Roof

'Guardians of the Galaxy' Trailer Sends ‘Hooked On a Feeling’ Sales Through the Roof
Oogachaka!

Sales of Blue Swede's "Hooked On a Feeling"
have gone through the roof following its use in the new trailer for the
film "Guardians of the Galaxy."

The song sold more than 2,000
downloads on Wednesday (Feb. 19), up about 700% in daily sales, industry
sources say. The two-and-a-half-minute trailer bowed Tuesday (Feb. 18)
on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live" at 11:35 p.m. eastern.

Sources say
that the song's 2,000 in digital sales instantly gave the tune its best
digital sales week ever. (And again, that's after just one day of
sales.) The current sales tracking week ends on Feb. 23. We'll have the
official weekly sales of the track, collected by Nielsen SoundScan, on
Feb. 26.

In the week ending Feb. 16, the song sold a negligible figure.

In
the trailer for "Guardians of the Galaxy," the familiar "oogachaka!"
chant from the song can be heard at around the 1:30 mark, and is then
repeated during a montage of fiery action scenes. The song is then heard
without interruption for the last 20 seconds of the trailer.

The song's previous best digital week came in 2008 when it sold 1,000 downloads (in the week ending March 16).

"Guardians of the Galaxy," starring Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana, will be released in theaters on Aug. 1.

Blue
Swede's "Feeling" became a No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit for the Swedish
band, reaching the top on the chart dated April 6, 1974. It was one of
four Hot 100 hits for the act, which also charted a top 10 single with
"Never My Love" (No. 7) in October 1974.

Blue Swede's take on
"Feeling" is one of three visits to the chart for the song, which was
first a hit for B.J. Thomas in 1968. He took the song to No. 5 on the
Hot 100 in early 1969. Decades later, in 1998, thanks in part to the TV
show "Ally McBeal," the song returned to the chart. A dancing baby --
grooving to Blue Swede's "Feeling" -- appeared as a hallucination on the
show in January 1998. Known as "Baby Cha Cha," the animated infant was
already a viral sensation by that point, but its popularity hit a new
level after its use in "Ally McBeal."

That popularization --
along with Baby Cha Cha's subsequent appearances in assorted TV
commercials -- led to a new recording and commercial CD release of the
song, credited to the anonymous studio group Baby Talk. The single went
on to sell 111,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, helping it
reach No. 71 on the Hot 100 the week of June 6, 1998.

Hear our hypothetical 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Awesome Mix Vol. 2

Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-Mixtape.jpg
Guardians of the Galaxy‘s soundtrack figures so prominently in the film that it almost qualifies as a supporting character.

Throughout the movie, it provides hooks for jokes and action
sequences and establishes a few important moments between its primary
characters. The fact that it’s all supposed to be coming from a tape
made for Peter Quill by his mother before she died—and before he was
whisked away from Earth by aliens—underlines the loneliness that defines
him. And it’s also just really good at doing what a soundtrack’s
supposed to do, bolstering the movie’s rambunctious oddball energy with a
bunch of vintage soft rock and soul songs that were, for the most part,
considered throwaway pop tunes when they were released. In other words,
just like the story’s protagonists, these songs are misfits.

Spoiler alert: At the end of the movie, Peter finds out that he’s been unknowingly carrying around a sequel to the Awesome Mix Vol. 1 tape. Presumably, we’ll hear what’s on it in the GOTG sequel—but honestly, that’s a really long wait. Using director James Gunn’s interview about the soundtrack at Vulture as a guide, here’s a hypothetical Awesome Mix Vol. 2, assembled using same method Gunn employed for Vol. 1: choosing hits from the ’70s Billboard
charts that aren’t quite important enough to have entered the pop
pantheon, and favoring the kind of lightweight, slightly funky stuff
that defined AOR radio back then. (We also included a couple of songs
he’d picked for GOTG that didn’t make the final cut.)

At 18 songs, it’s longer by half than the official soundtrack—but
let’s presume that Peter’s mother had access to 60-minute cassette tapes
and didn’t want to short him.

Why a '70s Mixtape Propels the Plot of 'Guardians of the Galaxy'

Chris Pratt in Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy

Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord in Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy, 2014.

Marvel

Director James Gunn promises to share the full mixtape with fans soon

Guardians of the Galaxy features a tree-like
creature named Groot, a talking raccoon and an electronic device just as
alien to children of the digital age: a Sony Walkman containing a
mixtape packed with '70s pop hits like 10cc's "I'm Not in Love," Rupert
Holmes' "Escape (The Pina Colada Song), The Runaways' "Cherry Bomb," and
David Bowie's "Moonage Daydream."

The archaic device belongs to Guardians lead, Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, played by Parks & Recreation
actor Chris Pratt. "It wasn't in the comics, and it wasn't in the
original script," explains James Gunn, 43, co-writer and director of the
hotly anticipated Marvel Comics adaptation.

Gunn added the plot device to establish Quill's attachment to earth
and an emotional connection to his late mother (who gave him the Walkman
and the tunes). Gunn simply chose songs he believed Quill's mother
would have liked, but he says, "There's also a sort of 'spacey-ness'
about the tracks that reminds me of the [Marvel] comic-book writer and
artist Jim Starlin."

Gunn chose songs for the movie by scouring Billboard's singles charts
"for every year in the '70s," compiling a master list of 500 songs. He
ultimately trimmed it down to 120 songs and then a 90-minute mixtape.
When Pratt was hired, Gunn says, "he asked if he could have the mixtape”
to prepare for the role. Gunn says he will likely release the full list
to fans in the future.

At the top of his list: Jackson 5's "I Want You Back," which Gunn
says "is the greatest pop song ever written." Gunn also enjoys Redbone's
"Come and Get Your Love." "I still love that song after probably
listening to it for 10 hours straight in the editing room and then also
on set. I think that's a testament to how great these songs are -- that I
still like them," he says.

With so many choices, some songs just didn't make the cut. According
to Gunn, he most regrets cutting a scene featuring Electric Light
Orchestra's "Livin' Thing" from the film. "If there was a house band for
Guardians…it would be ELO," he says.

Not only was the soundtrack written directly into the screenplay,
Gunn also played them on set alongside Tyler Bates' score, which was
also composed before filming. "We really baked the music into the
movie," says Gunn. "Having it be part of the initial filmmaking process
as opposed to something that you tack on at the end...it really made it a
much more holistic experience."

Despite the Walkman's importance, Gunn says he will likely take
another approach in the follow up. "To keep up the true tradition of the
movie…it may not have the music playing in the same exact way as the
first one," he says, also hoping other filmmakers will feel the same for
their films. "We did this from the heart, so if someone tries to copy
it, I'm not sure it would work."

'Guardians of the Galaxy' Soundtrack Battling for No. 1 on Billboard 200

'Guardians of the Galaxy' Soundtrack Battling for No. 1 on Billboard 200

Guardians of the Galaxy

The hot-selling Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 soundtrack is battling the new Now 51 compilation for No. 1 on next week's Billboard 200 chart.

Industry forecasters suggest the Awesome album could sell just over 100,000 in the week ending Aug. 10, while the Now 51 set is also aiming for sell around that many copies. (On Wednesday, Aug. 6, sources were projecting Now 51 to finish atop the tally, but it was too early -- at that point -- to estimate Awesome's potential sales.)

The Billboard 200's new top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, Aug. 13.

It would be the second week on the chart for the Awesome
album, which debuted at No. 3 with a bigger-than-expected 60,000 sold in
the week ending Aug. 3, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

If Awesome hits No. 1, it will mark the second soundtrack to reach No. 1 this year, following Frozen. Both albums were released by the Disney Music Group: Awesome on Marvel/Hollywood Records, and Frozen on Walt Disney Records.

Both the Awesome and Frozen albums also currently
sit in the top 10 of the Billboard 200 (Nos. 3 and 6, respectively),
giving the Disney Music Group (DMG) two concurrent top 10 sets for the
first time in a year. DMG last managed the feat on the chart dated Aug.
17, 2013 (with the Teen Beach Movie soundtrack on Walt Disney Records, and Selena Gomez's Stars Dance, on Hollywood Records).

Tony Stewart will compete in NASCAR race following fatal accident

Tony Stewart will compete in a NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International on Sunday after being involved in an incident that claimed the life of a driver during a race in New York on Saturday night.
The manager for Stewart's racing team, Greg Zipadelli, told the Associated Press that the three-time NASCAR champion will compete Sunday, saying the race is “business as usual.”
The decision comes after Stewart struck and killed a driver while he was on foot during a dirt track race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.
Amateur video of the incident shows racer Kevin Ward Jr. stepping toward Stewart's car at the Lucas Oil SuperSprint feature race after it appears Stewart cut off his driving line and forced him into the wall, causing him to spin out.
Moments later, Stewart’s car makes contact with Ward and drags him several feet before Ward slides 50 additional feet along the track. People in the crowd can be heard screaming during the incident.
A witness told the Associated Press that it appeared Ward was trying to confront Stewart. A video showed Ward standing to the right of Stewart's familiar No. 14 car, which seemed to kick out from the rear and hit him.
“The next thing I could see, I didn't see [the other driver] anymore,” witness Michael Messerly said. “It just seemed like he was suddenly gone.”
Ward, 20, was pronounced dead at F.F. Thompson Hospital at 11:15 p.m., according to the Ontario County Sheriff's Office.
The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. at the exit for turn 2 during lap 14 of the 25-lap event, according to the sheriff's office. The race was under caution when Ward was hit.- LA Times

Aquino ‘not worried’ about impeachment complaints

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang insisted on Sunday that President
Benigno Aquino III committed no impeachable offense as three impeachment
complaints against him were set to move forward at the
administration-controlled House of Representatives.

Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma claimed the Palace would
not interfere with the proceedings, saying it “recognizes the principle
of separation of powers” between the executive branch and the
legislature.

Benigno Aquino III“The President is not worried about the proceedings because he
knows that he has not committed any impeachable offense,” Coloma said in
Filipino over Radyo ng Bayan.

Congressmen belonging to the Makabayan bloc want Aquino removed
from office over the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) and the
Enhanced Defense Cooperation (EDCA) with the United States.

All three impeachment complaints against the President are set to
be referred on Monday (Aug. 11) to the House committee on justice,
which is tasked to determine if they are sufficient in form and in
substance.

The committee is chaired by Iloilo Rep. Niel Tupas Jr., a staunch ally of the President.

Coloma sought to downplay the impact of the impeachment complaints on the President, saying they were “not a priority.”

“The President has more important priorities focused on the
country’s development and on pushing for the reforms that he has
started,” he said.

Neophyte Kabataan Rep. Terry Ridon, who had endorsed one of the
impeachment complaints, earlier urged the justice committee “to listen
and consider the arguments we will present during the impeachment
proceedings.”

“They should not play blind, deaf, and mute to the travesties committed by the President,” Ridon said in a statement.

Coloma said it would be up to House members to determine the outcome of the impeachment complaints.

“They, the members of the chamber, are the ones who will decide on what they intend to do on the matter,” he said.

Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Kim Beef Is ‘Complicated,’ T.I. Says

Nicki Minaj performs at the 2014 Philly 4th Of July Jam

Nicki Minaj performs at the 2014 Philly 4th Of July Jam on July 4, 2014 in Philadelphia, PA.

Michael Branscom/VH1

Lil’ Kim is in full attack mode against Nicki
Minaj and it may be more "complicated" than anyone realizes, according
to T.I., who tells Billboard that things are bound to get sticky when a
“new and younger version” of an artist comes around after one who’s been
"dominating for so long.”

Should Nicki Minaj Respond to Lil Kim's 'Identity Theft'? (Poll)

The latest activity in the ongoing rivalry between the female rappers came on Aug. 4 when Kim unleashed her own remix
of Beyonce’s “Flawless,” where she responds to an apparent jab from
Minaj heard in the original remix. Days later Kim released another diss
track aimed at Minaj in "Identity Theft." Minaj has done her part to
keep the beef going with songs like "Stupid Hoe.”

Neither side looks to be calling a truce anytime soon, so Billboard
asked the opinion of someone with perspective on the matter: rapper T.I.

Tip, who has engaged in and helped dissolve
discrepancies in the past, believes that Kim's issue with Minaj aren't
specific to women -- or rappers, for that matter. "This is something
that can happen to men too," he says.

The chatter about Minaj potentially taking Kim’s spot, or Minaj
boldly proclaiming herself the Queen of Rap, doesn't help things either,
T.I. says.

"Just because you heard another person say that you gonna be on
edge," he explains. "I feel like that's more of the case with Kim and
Nicki, even though I don't know what started any of this, it's a little
more complicated to put to bed because of that fact."

He also notes that Minaj being constantly compared to Kim has an
impact as well. "It's gonna put a chip on your shoulder in a different
way too," T.I. says.

Meanwhile, T.I. says his protégé Iggy Azalea “could be” collaborating
on a song with Kim soon, though he wouldn’t confirm. The Aussie rapper
has been pitted against Minaj before. “That's a little more preposterous
like 'what the fuck' because they're not even in each other's lane,"
T.I. says of the Azalea and Minaj.

T.I. is currently busy readying his new album, Paperwork, and
prepping the latest season of T.I. & Tiny's: Family Hustle. He’s
also executive producing a new reality show, The Sisterhood of Hip Hop

Besides readying Paperwork for release, and prepping the latest
season of T.I. & Tiny's: The Family Hustle, he's executive producing
a new reality show, Sisterhood of Hip Hop, which debuts on Oxygen Aug.
12.

12 Ways to Make a Staycation Feel Like a Real Getaway

Just because you're not leaving home, doesn't mean that your vacation
can't be as relaxing as an exotic getaway. But in order to make a
staycation feel like vacation, you need to break up the monotony and
routine that comes with normal, everyday life.

So if you forgot to book your trip, you don't feel like traveling or
you're just too broke to go away, follow these simple tips in order to
make your staycation feel like a relaxing getaway.

  • 1. Go off the grid at work.

    Vacation

Work will be more likely to contact you if they know you're in
town, so if you can, don't tell them that you're vacation is actually a
    staycation.
  • 2. Resist the urge to answer work emails.

    Vvzfm

Just opening one work email can have serious consequences.
Your mind should be relaxing and not focused on the office. Besides,
it's actually helping your productivity. They can wait, seriously.
    Image: Imgur, HotDog804
  • 3. Limit your Internet usage

    Qeonlvh

It's easy to waste all of your free time off browsing the web.
Limit your Internet usage to designated times of the day, or only use
    if if you absolutely must.
    Image: Imgur, nodnodwinkwink
  • 4. Put your phone DOWN.

    Fhrsn

Just turn it off. Seriously. You'll be okay.
    Image: Imgur, neon_kid
  • 5. Do something in your city or town that you wouldn't normally do.

    Omsmny0

It's easy to fall into a routine, so try to visit an
attraction that you wouldn't normally visit. Act like a tourist
    (judgment-free!)in your own city.
    Image: Imgur, OtakuSubreddit
  • 6. Go to the movies, don't binge-watch Netflix.

    H9tog

Falling down the Netflix K-hole can be very easy, so instead
of binge-watching television shows, or watching 4 movies in a row, make
an effort to physically go to the movie theatre instead. It will feel
more like an experience instead of something you do casually. If you're
hesitant to fork over a hefty price for a movie ticket, look into local
screenings and free events happening in your area.
    Image: Imgur, skyleth
  • 7. Force yourself to read an entire book before your staycation is over.

    Cafmf

If you aren't a big reader, a book may be hard to pickup, but
reading is a great way to relax and to keep yourself away from
technology. Plus, you will forever associate that book with your awesome
    staycation.
    Image: Imgur, Scopolamina
  • 8. Build a fort.

    4873294030_403b531f71_o

Building forts inside is a favorite childhood pastime, but as an adult you can turn your comfortable living room into a relaxing and fun retreat.
    Image: Suzette
  • 9. Go out, but not where you normally go.

    Kd7baur

When you head out, try to visit a new restaurant or bar
instead of your same old haunt. You want the staycation to be a new
experience, so jump out of your comfort zone and head to a new place
    you've never been.
    Image: Imgur, 1Voice1Life
  • 10. Treat Yourself.

    F4e33uc

This is vacation, so if you have the means, treat yourself to a massage, some shopping or whatever makes you happy and relaxed.
    Image: Imgur, Tails94
  • 11. Turn your backyard or roof into a relaxing oasis.

    ?size=l

If the weather and space permits, create an outdoor area that
you will never want to leave. Even if you just create a comfortable
outdoor space to relax, it's important to get out of the house.
  • 12. Interrupt your routine.

    Fd51poz

In order to make your staycation stand out from your nomal
life, you need to break your everyday routine. Try to sleep in a little
later and visit places you wouldn't normally.

How Did Justin Timberlake Keep The 'NSYNC Reunion A Secret?

'VMAs Revealed' shows us how the biggest secrets of the VMAs were pulled off.
by Emilee Lindner

Showtime was nearing as four men hopped out of their SUV,
walked swiftly through a heavily guarded back door, and into a
top-secret rehearsal. It was the day of the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, and ‘NSYNC had to finalize their surprise performance without anyone finding out.

During “VMAs Revealed,” which aired today on MTV, producers and behind-the-scenes staff explained how the whole stunt was pulled off. At first, Justin Timberlake
said nothing to show-runners. While rehearsing on six different stages,
he left one stage out, only blocking out small amounts of choreography
during practice. At last minute, Timberlake’s team let very few people
in on the secret — he was bringing back the band, but no one knew until
they emerged through the stage’s trapdoors that very night. Watch the
behind-the-scenes clip below.

The ‘NSYNC reunion
went off without a hitch, but hours before the show, the KAWS-designed
stage broke down. The skull-shaped stage was supposed to rotate to
reveal different acts throughout the night, but turns out, it wouldn’t
rotate at all. With minutes ticking down until Lady Gaga‘s big opener, stars like Drake and Miley had to rework their performances, leaving everyone backstage in a scurry, as the clip below reveals.

Cop Who Saved Baby's Life in 1994 Will See Her Get Married | The Stir

Back in 1994, Shammarah Hamideh
was a 2-month-old baby who suddenly stopped breathing. Her tortured
father stood outside his apartment holding his baby, who had gone limp,
unsure of what he could do to save her life.
Then-Sgt. Joseph Barca was the first to respond to
the call and the officer became a hero that day when he managed to clear
the infant's airway obstruction and help her take a breath. Basically, he saved her life as she was on her way to the hospital.

Over the years, Barca and the girl's family stayed in touch and
Shammarah's parents -- who are from Palestine -- even referred to the
cop as their daughter's "American father." And then the sweetest reward
of all came: the nursing school graduate, now 20, invited the police officer and his wife to her wedding.

Barca
and Hamideh made headlines in the '90s. Remembering it as a day he'd
never forget, the officer said resuscitation didn't work for the infant
and that he had to hit her on the back a few times and then try and
breath into her mouth again and again.

I can't imagine the joy experienced in that hospital room when
Hamideh's father, who was left alone in front of their apartment as an
ambulance whisked his baby away, arrived to find Barca was alive and
well. The cop says he told him, "You hear that baby crying? That's
yours," and that dad then began sobbing. Reading that makes me want to
cry, too!

Hamideh will be married in August in Chicago. She says Barca sends her a birthday card and a check every year on her birthday and that he and his wife treat her like a daughter.

What a sweet story. With so much negative attention placed on police
officers lately, it's good to remember that there are just as many good
apples in the world -- in all professions -- as there are bad ones. Love that these folks all keep in touch and that gratitude is alive and well.

What do you think about this story? Are you getting tired of hearing so many negative tales about police officers?

Box Office: 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' off to strong start

Despite getting roundly shredded by critics, the new "Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles" movie is off to a strong start at the box office. "TMNT"
took in $25.6 million Friday, doubling the Friday take of last weekend's
champion, "Guardians of the Galaxy."

The Friday haul for the
Michael Bay-produced reboot from Nickelodeon Movies puts it on track to
gross around $65 million for the weekend.

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'The Turtles have proven to be quite resilient over the years, beginning life
in the pages of a black-and-white independent comic book before jumping
to an animated TV series and their first live action film in 1990. In
total, they've had three previous feature films, three animated TV
series and a live action TV series.

The new film has been trashed
by critics, with a lowly 20% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But that
hasn't stopped new and old Turtles fans.

With its big opening,
"TMNT" is the second big box office hit in a row for the month. Last
weekend, "Guardians of the Galaxy" opened to an August record of $94.3
million. The Marvel space romp grossed $12.3 million Friday for a total
of $146.7 million in its first week of release.

Other films
opening this weekend include the found footage bad weather thriller
"Into the Storm," which grossed a solid $6.5 million considering its
lack of big-name talent. "The Hundred-Foot Journey," the comedy-drama
starring Helen Mirren and boasting Steven Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey
among its producers, grossed $3.6 million.

"Step Up: All In," the
fifth film in the "Step Up" franchise, grossed $2.8 million, for an
expected $10 million weekend. This is the lowest opening yet for a "Step
Up" film. The original, released in 2006, is still the franchise's
biggest hit, grossing $65.3 million. However, the film is already doing
well overseas, where it has grossed $26 million already.

In
limited release, "What If," the romantic comedy starring Daniel
Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan, grossed $49,400 on Friday after opening on 20
screens.

Happy Weekend!

Stop Complaining. Take Care Of These 15 Things And You’ll Be Happier

The world is full of self-help books and advice on how to be a
better/happier/more successful person. Most of it is useless, and all of
it costs money.

In the interest of creating more happy humans on this planet we’ve
compiled a self-help list of our own. As a fair warning this post
contains a heavy dose of truth. Those that are allergic to truth should
probably stop now.

Read. Enjoy. Implement.

1.) You suck at prioritizing the things that matter.

No-BS-advice-1
Here’s a brutal truth: there are only 24 hours in a day. That’s it.
You only have 24 hours to eat, sleep, work, Facebook, Netflix, exercise,
complain, etc. So if you only have a certain amount of time to get
things done, why do you wait until the last minute every time? A
deadline is an immovable object, it won’t be going anywhere. So why are
you acting like you have all the time in the world to get something
done?

2.) Because you suck at prioritizing, you get frustrated and complain that you didn’t have enough time.

No-BS-advice-2
Bullshit. Seriously stop it. You had plenty of time, but chose to
spend it dicking around like a kindergartener during snack time. Now
you’re stressed and annoyed, and you still have to finish you work.
Maybe you learned something here?

3.) You are what you eat, and you eat like crap.

No-BS-advice-3
The old adage that you are what you eat is still around today because
it’s true. If you eat terribly, then guess how you’re going to feel.
Instead of going for that third helping of grocery store brand mac and
cheese, maybe you could try something healthier with smaller portions?
You’ll feel better and be more focused. Fun fact: Salads can actually be
pretty delicious.

4.) Exercise. Just do it.

No-BS-Advice-4
You may think those modern day cavemen are crazy, but they have a
point. We human beings evolved running and hunting on the savannas of
Africa. We need to exercise in order for our bodies to function
properly. It doesn’t have to be chasing (or getting chased by) tigers, a
moderate jog should do the trick.

5.) You don’t need another drink.

No-BS-Advice-5
There’s nothing wrong with drinking in moderation. It’s super social
and a great way to unwind. However it stops being that the moment you
start drinking yourself stupid. If the price is a day of two of feeling
like complete garbage, then no thanks. Go home, sober up, and get a jump
on the next day.

6.) Sleep late and forever be tired.

No-BS-Advice-6
Yep. I know what I just said sounds like heresy, but it’s true. When
you sleep late on the weekends, it throws off your whole internal clock.
That just makes you feel extra horrible when you’ve got to shift back
into your regular routine on Monday. Might this be the cause of your
chronic tiredness?

7.) Don’t go to sleep drunk.

No-BS-Advice-7
Or under the influence of any drug for that matter. Doing that is a
guaranteed way to screw up your REM cycle, which will leave you feeling
horrible when you wake up.

8.) Your friends are losers.

No-BS-Advice-8
Of course you don’t want to spend time with people who take away from
your life. You also don’t want to be around people who add nothing to
your life. We are the sum of the people we spend the most time with. If
you’re hanging out with directionless slobs, guess what you become?

9.) Following up is next to godliness.

No-BS-Advice-9
Networking can be a great thing. It’s important to know though, that
if you’re not following up and making an effort to stay in touch with
people, then your time spent networking is wasted. Follow up, follow up,
follow up. You might think you’re being annoying, but busy people
appreciate the fine art of the follow up.

10.) You hate your job.

No-BS-Advice-10
Or maybe you only like it a little bit. Let me ask you though, is it
what you want to do for the rest of your life? If you’re not happy then
what the hell are you doing? You only have one life. Why are you wasting
yours doing something you’re not passionate about?

11.) I want to follow my dream, but I’m waiting for the right time.

No-BS-Advice-11

Excuse me, but what the hell are you talking about? There is never a
“right” time for following your dreams. It will never feel “right.” You
just have to do it. The more time you waste with excuses, the less time
you have to live the life of your dreams. Just think about that.

12.) Healthy relationships? Who needs those?

No-BS-Advice-12
Umm you do? Seriously. If all of your relationships crash and burn,
then maybe the problem isn’t that “crazy” guy or girl. The problem is
you. It could be time to do some self reflecting.

13.) Take 20 minutes to clear your head.

No-BS-Advice-13
In order to make the best decisions, your brain needs breaks. Maybe
it’s meditation or taking a walk. Just pick something where you can let
your brain do nothing for a little while. You’ll be amazed how much
better you feel afterwards.

14.) You’re good enough, let’s move on.

No-BS-Advice-14
You’re good enough to achieve anything you want to achieve. Remember
it, believe it. There are always going to be things we don’t like about
ourselves. Pick the ones you can change and work on them. Accept the
ones you can’t change, and move on. Don’t get caught up in the self
sabotaging cycle of telling yourself that you’re not good enough. It
doesn’t end well, because it doesn’t end.

15.) Stop telling yourself lies.

No-BS-Advice-15
Stop it. If you keep lying to yourself about this thing or that, it’s
going to be harder to ultimately face the truth. Your lies will only
make you more bitter, and keep you from achieving your goals.

Jennifer Aniston wants to lose 5 lbs.

Jennifer & Justin Host Their Famous Friends In CaboNow Julia Roberts may not have made any best celeb bikini bodies list, but Jennifer Aniston
certainly has. Yet even she isn’t happy with her weight. Jennifer said
she weighs 115 pounds but wishes she could get herself down to 110.
Seriously. RELATED: Jennifer Aniston opens up about Justin Theroux.
Jennifer confessed her weight loss goal in an interview.

These days, if I was being super picky, I would love to
drop five pounds. That is just where I have always been really
comfortable at about 110 to 113 pounds. But it is harder to get that
down, at this age.

“I usually give myself bread on the weekends, but really, my body doesn’t love carbs. I have a Greek salad in front of me, but I also indulge … there’s a balance.

There is also this pressure in Hollywood to be ageless.”
Jennifer is 5’5″. She would be underweight at 110 lbs. Goodness! Take
a look at her rocking a bikini in these pics. They were taken just last
December! The actress said she has no intention of getting plastic surgery.

I think, what I have been witness to, is seeing women
trying to stay ageless with what they are doing to themselves. I am
grateful to learn from their mistakes, because I am not injecting sh*t
into my face. I see them and my heart breaks. I think, ‘Oh God, if you
only know how much older you look.’ They are trying to stop the clock
and all you can see is an insecure person who won’t let themselves just
age.

“I also have a fiancé who will put a gun to my head if I touch my face in any way.”
Well that’s great incentive for Jennifer!
